SIR – If this coronavirus is relatively harmless for most people, and if, as predicted, its spread is “inevitable”, why should we oldies and other vulnerable people not self-isolate and let the rest of the population carry on with keeping the economy running?

It seems reasonable for an island with a good record of containment.

SIR – How should a man with a partner and three children of school age “self-isolate”?

Does all the family go into purdah for 14 days or does Father lock himself in the shed at the end of the garden?

How do we advise the Amazon delivery man that he cannot have a signature and to leave the parcel on the doorstep? How do we take in the grocery delivery?

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分SIR – It is unbelievable that passengers arriving at UK airports are not having their temperatures checked (Letters, February 29). In Johannesburg, three weeks ago, all arriving passengers were checked in an efficient manner.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分SIR – Surely airport testing at the embarkation stage would make more sense, allowing a chance to contain the virus where it currently is, rather than allowing it to be transported to somewhere it has not yet arrived.

SIR – Your front-page photo of “health personnel” checking the temperature of a guest at the Costa Adeje Palace Hotel (February 29) shows a basic lack of simple hygiene.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分The temperature probe they are seen using is meant to be held a short distance from the skin. By actually touching this lady’s forehead with the probe, they are potentially spreading the virus to all the guests they check. Such attempts to stop the spread of the virus may actually be making matters worse.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分SIR – One reason GPs are retiring is the bureaucratic and useless requirement to have an annual appraisal for “revalidation”. It is a waste of valuable time, and it will be interesting to see how many GPs returning to practice for the coronavirus outbreak make it a condition that they be exempt. What then, for the present incumbents who have to endure this nonsense?

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分SIR – I see that Steve Bruce, the manager of Newcastle United FC, has banned his players from shaking hands due to coronavirus concerns.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分I wonder if he has considered extending this ban to spitting on the pitch – something nearly all footballers seem to do with alarming frequency.

Royal ruse for D-Day

The Queen talks with Mi5 officers during her visit to its headquarters last week Credit: VICTORIA JONES/AFP

SIR – MI5 rightly drew attention during the Queen’s visit to its headquarters to George VI’s “central role” in misleading the Nazis over plans for D-Day.

His involvement began when two MI5 officers called on the King’s private secretary, Sir Alan Lascelles, on March 3 1944. In his diary he wrote that they “explained how the King’s visits in the next few months could assist the elaborate cover scheme to bamboozle the German intelligence over the time and place for Overlord”.

Much press publicity was given to visits to troops in the South East to help strengthen the Nazi suspicion that Calais, not Normandy, would be the scene of Allied invasion, and earlier than the actual date in June.

What seemed to be a huge oil-storage complex near Dover also received a royal visit, as M15 has now revealed. It was in fact a complete fake, designed by Basil Spence and built by Shepperton Studios.

An element of the elaborate deception to which MI5 did not refer took the King to Scapa Flow. There he inspected the fleet during a three-day visit in May. Prominent press reports indicated that he had “ taken leave” of his fleet in “cold and lonely northern waters” as it prepared for battle. The prospect of a Scandinavian attack was created to deter Nazi troop movement to reinforce northern France.

It is right that this contribution to D-Day’s success made by the Queen’s father, who meant so much to her, should at last be fully acknowledged.

Carbon trap

SIR – Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, suggests that regional airports be developed to make up for judges blocking Heathrow’s third runway on environmental grounds.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分Regional air traffic would generate as much CO2 as at Heathrow, so how does regional development overcome judicial objections aimed at achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050?

Civil service woes

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分SIR – It is essential that top civil servants remain above political influence. The permanent secretary at the Home Office must receive the total support of the Government.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分It is extremely sad that Sir Philip Rutnam felt it necessary to resign before he could be critical of his minister.

SIR – Having spent the last dozen years of my working life as a civil servant, I was deeply impressed by the high ability of the senior people – often much higher than the politicians that they served.

The relationships are rather like the Royal Navy in the days before the Samuel Pepys reforms, when the captain was an aristocrat who gave the orders, and the master was a professional seaman who ran the ship. The senior civil servant is sometimes the master to the political captain.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分Much of Britain’s stability and success over the centuries has depended on the ability to progress by evolution rather than revolution. It would help no one to pursue the road recommended by Allister Heath (Comment, February 27) of destroying tried and tested systems for the wholesale adoption of new and untried methods.

Such an approach leads to a long period of utter confusion and the end product is rarely optimal.

Kissy kissy

SIR – The presence of the Peace in early church liturgies does not justify today’s indiscriminate kissing.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分Kissing was then a sign of respect not affection. Men did not kiss women in church since they sat separately.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分Churches later moved almost universally towards a symbolic greeting: Roman clergy bring their cheeks close; Maronites clasp each other’s fingers; Copts bow and touch hands; Armenians merely bow.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分Today’s kissing, alas, was reintroduced with little understanding of the differences between historical periods and no concern for the reasons why churches modified the original practice.

The law of the loo

SIR – All too often the queues at lavatories in public places2020欧洲杯足球即时比分 are distressing for women in need. If as a Lady (in lavatory terminology) I were to use a Gents for its designated purpose, what would happen (apart from immediate welcome relief)? Is it illegal?

Snappers make an exhibition of themselves

SIR – Is it time for exhibitions to return to a “no photographs” policy?

At the Tutankhamun exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London, viewing was completely spoilt by people who had to photograph every artefact many times.

They didn’t seem interested in reading the captions for any facts about the items. When they look at their pictures later, they will have had no idea of how these objects were used or of the materials from which they were made.

Divorce turned into bitter single combat

SIR – The intention of Lord Farmer and others (Letters, February 29) to disrupt the Government’s Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill is based on false premises.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分First, lawyers will lose, not gain, employment from the removal of fault in divorce proceedings. The profession’s overwhelming enthusiasm for the proposed change is because they see the damage caused by one party having to attack the other and the pretence that any “blame” is wholly one-sided.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分Under the Divorce Reform Act 1969 the parties are forced into a dishonest charade to obtain what they sensibly want – divorce by consent. Under 2 per cent of “respondents” oppose “petitions”.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分The Government is right to say that the Bill “will directly benefit families by supporting the parties to focus on the future rather than raking over
allegations about the past”.

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分It is common ground that post-marital arrangements about the children, the house and the money are best made consensually. This is hindered by making the initial divorce process adversarial. The would-be wreckers of the Bill claim that it will leave more children “reeling from the aftermath”. In reality, they will be better served by their parents not participating in a mock fight.

Far from being “undermined by divorce becoming uncontestable”, marriage will gain from a comparatively dignified exit strategy. All concerned are demeaned by keeping it on legal life-support when dead in all but name.

Professor Chris Barton
Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire

2020欧洲杯足球即时比分SIR – Some relationships break down through no fault by either party. However, with the law as it stands, the couple have to find a reason to blame the other partner, very often the parent of the children.

The legacy handed down has a huge impact on the children. As a relationship therapist I welcome the proposed law, as the children are the priority in any inevitable break-up.
